2017 Pirelli Calendar
Unretouched beauty of Older Celebrities
Pirelli Calendars, almost abandon decades ago continues to be the face of change. In a trend started with Kim Kardashian years ago, unretouched, unphotoshoped images of women is a new wave. Presenting their natural beauty is German Photographer Peter Lindbergh, lenses them without even makeup.
Titled Emotional, Lindbergh explains his 2017 calendar that presents without the glitz.
“I wanted to portray women not in terms of their perfection, but through their feelings and emotions. That’s why I called the sedition of the calendar Emotional; not some artificial perfection, but the real world and the emotions that well up behind the faces of these women.”
Of course they are far from average women, but that is ok, the are still very real, older celebrity actress, doing some thing very bold. Making a statement that natural and aging still is refined beauty. It is an an list too, Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore and Helen Mirren.
Helen laughed when she said she accepted in a heart beat. When he told her she would nude she paused, laughed and said ok again. He then explained she would more nude than naked, she would be revealing her self, not so much her skin.
This is no longer an anomaly, some obscure approach to woman’s beauty. It has become common enough that the public now request the more natural look. We are even getting requests to leave all the stretch marks and cellulite in the images.
Recently we had a widower come in to finish an order of photographs his wife had commissioned before her passing, she was 50 at the time of the session. He wanted them unretouched, unenhance, fully natural nudes. She a very normal potato farmer partner. He loved every curve, wrinkle and crinkle. He wanted real.
Stars like Alica Keys are venturing out sans makeup. Not so much as a statement but as a choice. She is not proclaiming she will never wear makeup again, just not right now. She, as is the Pirelli Calendar, empowering women to have a choice. To be accepted with that choice.
It is not saying that makeup or even photoshop retouching is bad or even out of step with shifting human landscape. It is about choices, that beauty still shines through regardless.
For photography it means we have to be more exacting with our light to really bring that personality out, to still be flattering to our subject. There is no safety net, which I like.
Follow the link to the Pirelli Calendar, (Pirelli Calendar) now just called The Cal. to see all the images and enjoy the video. Both are very cool.
It is fascinating to hear the women’s comments, almost against the grain. I love that Lindbergh is an older guy with a vision that everyone leaps to.
